Wear a helmet
Wearing a ski or snowboard helmet can significantly reduce the risk of a head injury. A good helmet is lightweight and comfortable, and doesn’t impair your hearing or vision. A buff or a cap may be worn underneath the helmet. The strap of the goggles, however, should be worn over the helmet. Helmets should meet the EN 1077 standard. Those certified under the FIS safety standard and those with a multi-directional impact protection system (e.g. MIPS) provide even better protection.
Helmet-mounted cameras or listening to music can be distracting and increase the risk of an accident. A helmet camera increases the risk of injury in the event of a fall, as it acts as a lever and puts additional pressure on the head. So enjoy the snow, the weather and the view – without earbuds or a helmet camera.
Tips
- Try when you buy, the helmet should neither feel tight nor wobble.
- The helmet must also be a good fit with goggles – no tightness or wobbling.
- Adjust the chin straps – you should be able to fit your finger between your chin and the strap.
